Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) strongest candidate for the 2027 presidential election, urging the party to bring him back into its fold.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Lamido said, “I think for PDP now, they should try to woo him [Jonathan]; he is their best bet.”
Praising Jonathan’s experience, leadership style, and ability to collaborate, Lamido noted that no southern PDP figure currently matches his political credentials.
“He is most welcome, competent, and very qualified… I don’t see a better alternative in the PDP if Jonathan returns,” Lamido asserted. “If we’re zoning the presidency to the South, it should be PDP—and Jonathan is the most capable.”
His comments come amid growing speculation about Jonathan’s potential return to the PDP and the 2027 race. Though Jonathan has kept a low political profile since leaving office in 2015, behind-the-scenes talks have reportedly continued.
The development follows the recent resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the PDP, which has triggered a wave of defections and left the party at a crossroads ahead of the next election cycle.
