The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has emphasized that local governments in the state have no justification for failing to implement projects that contribute to the socioeconomic development of communities at the grassroots level.
Governor Eno made this statement on Saturday during the disbursement of N50 million as part of the Eket ARISE Empowerment Initiative and small business grants, benefiting 500 recipients. The event, organized by the Eket Local Government, also saw the commissioning of the 5,000-seat Eket City Hall and the laying of the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art Eket Legislative Complex.
Represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong, Governor Eno expressed his enthusiasm about these milestones, describing them as aligned with his administration’s ARISE Agenda.
“I am thrilled to be in Eket. This is a landmark project. Whenever you see this hall, you’ll know you are in Eket,” he remarked. “As speakers have said, this is not just a hall for the senatorial district; it is a facility that can be used by the entire state.”
Archibong further stated, “Governor Eno, who has sent me as his representative today, will soon be here himself, and I’m certain he will further enhance the work already started. This multi-faceted event—the N50 million disbursement, the foundation laying of the legislative chamber, and the commissioning of this magnificent building—marks a significant moment in the history of this region.”
He continued, “This is the ARISE Agenda in action at the local government level. The Governor is committed to ensuring that every local government area in the state is filled with impactful, life-changing projects.”
Earlier, the Chairman of Eket Local Government, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, explained that the projects were designed to complement and further the transformative goals of Governor Eno’s ARISE Agenda.
“The Eket City Hall is more than just a building; it represents unity and progress,” Tommey said. “With a capacity of 5,000, and featuring offices and a mini-conference hall, it is set to become a major venue for conferences, events, and social gatherings. This project will not only have cultural and economic importance, but it will also significantly boost our internally generated revenue and create numerous job opportunities.”
He also highlighted the impact of the Eket ARISE Empowerment Initiative, noting that the N50 million in grants for 500 entrepreneurs was a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are vital to the local economy. “As Governor Umo Eno has shown, empowering SMEs is a key priority for this administration,” Tommey concluded.
