The management of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, has dismissed as false and misleading, recent reports suggesting that the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, has been suspended.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Foluso Ogunmodede, the management clarified that Prof. Fasina remains the substantive Vice Chancellor and has only proceeded on a six-month accumulated annual and research leave. His tenure is expected to end in February 2026, at which time he will officially hand over to a successor.
According to Ogunmodede, the University’s Governing Council, at its 7th Emergency Meeting held on April 14, approved 126 working days of accumulated leave for Prof. Fasina, out of the 288 days he initially requested. The leave was granted to enable him to engage in academic research.
The statement further explained that during his leave, Prof. Fasina recommended two Deputy Vice Chancellors to act on his behalf, not to replace him. The Governing Council subsequently appointed the most senior among them, Prof. Olubunmi Samuel Shittu, to serve as Acting Vice Chancellor.
“It has come to the attention of the university management that certain individuals are spreading deliberate falsehoods and engaging in malicious misrepresentation of the situation, with the intent to mislead the public,” the statement read.
“We therefore deem it necessary to set the record straight: Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina remains the substantive Vice Chancellor of FUOYE and is legally entitled to his accumulated leave. He chose to begin this leave on Monday, April 14, 2025.”
The university expressed strong disapproval of what it described as the “deliberate twisting of facts and dissemination of baseless allegations” aimed at tarnishing the image of Prof. Fasina.
The management urged the public to disregard the false claims and called on those responsible for spreading misinformation to desist. It also warned that legal action may be taken against individuals or groups who continue to mislead the public and defame the university’s leadership.
