AU Lifts Ban On Gabon

            AU lifts sanctions against Gabon

The African Union (AU) has officially lifted sanctions on Gabon, marking the country’s reinstatement into continental affairs following the August 2023 military coup. The AU’s Peace and Security Council announced the decision on Wednesday, citing a “generally successful” political transition under the leadership of General Brice Oligui Nguema.

Gabon was suspended from the AU after General Oligui led a bloodless coup that removed longtime President Ali Bongo from power, ending the Bongo family’s 55-year political dominance. At the time, the AU strongly condemned the takeover, enforcing sanctions in line with its policy against unconstitutional changes in government.

Following his assumption of power, Oligui pledged to restore civilian rule after a two-year transition. Earlier this month, he was elected president with more than 94% of the vote, though the election faced minimal opposition.

The AU’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security confirmed the reinstatement via X (formerly Twitter), stating that Gabon could “immediately resume her participation in the activities” of the Union after a favorable review of its political progress.

President Oligui welcomed the move in a Facebook post, expressing “a deep sense of pride” and framing the AU’s decision as recognition of the Gabonese people’s efforts to rebuild their nation “in peace, order, and dignity.”

The decision also follows sustained diplomatic outreach, including a high-profile meeting between Oligui and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, aimed at securing regional support for Gabon’s reintegration.

Despite being rich in oil, Gabon faces ongoing socio-economic challenges, including high unemployment, poor infrastructure, and significant public debt. The new constitution introduced under Oligui’s administration grants expanded powers to the presidency, raising concerns among international observers about the country’s long-term democratic direction.
