The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has announced that the three senators from Kebbi State, elected on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform, are set to defect to the APC.
Ganduje made this statement after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Friday. During the meeting, Ganduje was accompanied by Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, as well as Senators Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki.
According to Ganduje, extensive discussions took place among key stakeholders in Kebbi, leading to the decision that the three PDP senators will join the APC. “This is a positive development and reflects the current political trend in Nigeria,” Ganduje said. “Almost every week, we see members of other political parties switching to our party.”
Ganduje further explained that the APC delegation came to the President to seek his blessing for this move, which he has graciously granted. “By Tuesday, you will see the outcome in the Senate,” he added, confirming the planned defections.
The APC chairman emphasized that the process of integrating the senators into the party would be smooth, thanks to the party’s political experience in handling such matters.
Addressing concerns about the rise of a one-party state, Ganduje dismissed such fears, stating, “We are not advocating for a one-party system, but if this is the will of the people, we cannot oppose it. Too many political parties can disrupt governance, just as too many cooks spoil the soup.”
He added that the defections align with President Tinubu’s initiative to strengthen the APC, saying, “We must act democratically to increase our numbers and improve our political influence and capacity.”
