A senior broadcast journalist with Ogun State Television (OGTV), Abeokuta, Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu, tragically passed away on Monday after collapsing while preparing for her afternoon shift at the state-owned station.
Her death was confirmed in a statement by the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Mr. Bunmi Adigun, and reported by Vanguard on Tuesday night.
“Agbakaizu, a dedicated staff member of Ogun State Television, tragically collapsed while preparing for afternoon shift, and despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre,” the statement read.
Adigun praised the late journalist as a passionate professional and described her as a “versatile journalist and a passionate comrade,” noting that she had previously served as Vice Chairman of the OGTV Chapel and was a committed member of the union.
Mrs. Agbakaizu, aged 52, was also an ex-officio member of the NUJ Ogun State Council. She is survived by two children, her elderly mother, friends, and colleagues.
The Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) expressed deep sorrow over her passing. In a statement signed by Chairperson Mrs. Sekinat Salam, the association said her death was a great loss, especially at a time when her experience and leadership were still needed.
“Her compassion, dedication, and love for journalism left a mark on all who knew her,” the statement read. “Though she died at 52, her life of service to God and humanity will be remembered for years to come.”
The union and association extended their condolences to her family and prayed for strength and comfort for those she left behind.
