Akwa Ibom Governor Threatens To Sack Commissioners Over Neglect Of Duties

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has issued a strong warning to members of his cabinet, stating that any commissioner or special adviser found to be negligent, indolent, or insubordinate during official duties will be immediately removed from office—regardless of status or gender.

The governor’s message, delivered in a video interview posted by African Independent Television and reported by Punch Online on Saturday, follows concerns about growing laxity among some cabinet members. Reports suggest that a number of officials have been shirking responsibilities, citing inadequate office funding and dismissing government efforts with the phrase “Mkpo Ibaha”—a local expression meaning “there’s nothing in government.”

Governor Eno made it clear that such attitudes are unacceptable and urged any dissatisfied appointees to resign voluntarily rather than wait to be dismissed.

The latest warning was reportedly triggered by an incident in which the governor, after attending an official event, made an unplanned stop at another function—only to find that several key cabinet members had not followed or supported him at the second venue.

“From now on, let it be clear—if you hear that I’ve fired a commissioner from your local government, it is because of insubordination,” Eno declared. “It is a full-time job. You must be with me at all times—go with me and return with me.”

He stressed that cabinet roles are serious responsibilities undertaken under oath and not to be treated casually. Referring to his team as his “first eleven,” the governor said they must be fully present and actively support him in the implementation of the ARISE Agenda—his administration’s development blueprint.

Eno also reminded appointees that he, too, had served as a commissioner and never once abandoned his governor during duty. “The fact that I’m simple doesn’t mean I’m an appointed governor. I was elected by the people,” he said.

He concluded by warning that any official who prioritizes personal interests over public service should prepare to receive a “red card.”
