A tragic accident occurred on Friday, May 23, 2025, along the newly rehabilitated Ikangba/Agoro Road in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, when a truck lost control and struck a group of students from Seico Secondary School. The incident claimed the life of a female student who was reportedly sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to eyewitness accounts, the students were on their way home after completing their exam when the truck, coming from the Molipa end of the road, veered off its lane and rammed into them. The vehicle eventually crashed into the fence of a nearby Redeemed Christian Church.
Mr. Eko Nicholas, Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR), confirmed the death of the female student at the scene and noted that another student, also female, was critically injured.
“The students were holding their question papers, clearly coming from their exam. It’s a heartbreaking incident. We are hoping and praying for the recovery of the injured student,” Nicholas said.
He criticized the government for failing to implement safety measures such as speed bumps and street lighting along the road, which he said could prevent such tragedies. “This brings the number of lives lost on this road since February to six,” he added. “We are again calling on the state government to install speed breakers and lights to prevent further loss of life. This road serves several schools, and many students walk it daily.”
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed the incident. TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi said, “Our officers have confirmed the unfortunate event. One school pupil lost her life.”
Residents and activists continue to urge the government to take immediate action to improve road safety in the area.
