Abducted Ibadan Schoolgirl Freed After 13 Days In Captivity

A 12-year-old girl, Munachi Umenyi, who was abducted in Ibadan, Oyo State, has been safely released.

Munachi was kidnapped on February 12, 2026, around 7:20 a.m. in the Challenge area of Ibadan while being dropped off at her private secondary school. According to reports, the attackers arrived in a vehicle without license plates and seized her as she stepped out of the car transporting her to school.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen fired shots into the air and at the vehicle’s tires before speeding away with the child.

A family source confirmed her release to Punch on Wednesday night, February 25, expressing gratitude for her safe return.

“In thanksgiving to God, we announce the safe release of Munachi Umenyi. God be praised. Thanks to you all for your prayers, support and encouragement. Remain blessed,” the message read.

Sources familiar with the situation indicated that a ransom was paid to secure her freedom, though the amount was not disclosed.
