Residents of Etitinabu Na Ndagbo community in Afaraukwu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently release their son, Nnamdi Kanu.
The appeal was made on Saturday during a press briefing, where community leaders said Kanu’s continued incarceration has caused deep emotional distress to his immediate family and the wider community.
Speaking to journalists at the community hall, the kinsmen of the Indigenous People of Biafra leader called for a compassionate review of his case to allow for his release and reunion with his family and community.
Addressing the briefing on behalf of the community, Professor Ugochukwu Ogbonna, Professor Leo Obinna, Ikechukwu Ndubueze, Mrs Victoria Ngozi Orjinanta and other natives described the people of Etitinabu Na Ndagbo as peace-loving and law-abiding.
In a statement, the community said, “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is our cherished son, whose continued incarceration has caused deep emotional distress to his immediate family and to our people at large.”
They further appealed to President Tinubu to “listen to our plea and extend a hand of love to us by releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kenneth Okwu-Kanu.”
The community assured that if released unconditionally, Kanu would continue to conduct himself as a law-abiding citizen, adding that his freedom would contribute to stability in the South-East.
Kanu’s kinsmen also expressed gratitude to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and House of Representatives member Obi Aguocha for their efforts toward securing his release.
During the gathering, community members were seen singing and beating the community gong, a symbol of distress and lamentation.
