Ademola Lookman: Ditching England For Nigeria Was The Best Move Of My Life

Rejecting England for Nigeria changed my Life ? CAF player of the year Ademola Lookman

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has described his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria as one of the most defining moments of his football career.

Speaking in an interview with ARISE TV, the newly crowned 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year said the move not only reshaped his professional journey but also deepened his connection to his roots.

“Without a doubt, it changed my career and my life,” Lookman said. “People know that. This is my home. This is my place. I enjoy it here. I’m the son of the soil.”

Born in London, Lookman played for England at youth levels before committing to Nigeria in 2022—a turning point that coincided with a meteoric rise in his form. His name was etched into history after he netted a sensational hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy.

Now 27, Lookman has established himself as one of Europe’s most in-form forwards. He credits his success to discipline, self-belief, and a relentless work ethic.

“I think it was just self-belief and working hard every day. When you do that, you build confidence. Eventually, your hard work pays off,” he explained.

That mindset, he said, helped him navigate difficult chapters of his career, including a challenging loan spell at Fulham, where he missed a critical penalty.

“Every day, I try to improve myself—on and off the pitch. That consistency has been key.”

Winning the African Footballer of the Year award was particularly emotional for Lookman, who sees it as both a personal milestone and a national achievement.

“It’s amazing. Honestly, it’s a privilege. I carry it with pride. To be among the great names who have won this award—it’s truly a blessing.”

Returning to Nigeria with the award was a full-circle moment for the forward. He visited Lagos to present the trophy to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. His trip also included a visit to Phase 2, the neighborhood where he spent part of his childhood with his grandmother and father.

“Bringing this award back to Lagos means everything to me. I’ve been cradling it all day. Presenting it to the President—it was a real honour.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu hailed Lookman as a beacon of hope and a role model for millions of young Nigerians, calling him a symbol of the “Greater Lagos Rising” spirit.

When asked if he would be content to retire now after reaching such heights, Lookman was unequivocal.

“Definitely not. Retirement isn’t even close. There’s so much more to achieve. This is just another chapter in the journey.”

Following his breakout season, Lookman has attracted interest from several Premier League heavyweights, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United. Atalanta have reportedly set a €50 million price tag on their star forward, who is now considered one of Europe’s most valuable and consistent attacking talents.
