The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has issued a statement following the involvement of its President-Elect, Abubakar Yakubu, in a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a child in Surulere, Lagos. Yakubu, who recently won the guild’s presidential election after defeating Rita Daniels, was arrested after the incident, which also left the child’s mother injured.
Outgoing AGN President Emeka Rollas confirmed the development on Instagram, describing the event as a heartbreaking accident and noting that both the guild and the bereaved family recognise it as such.
“The Actors Guild of Nigeria is deeply saddened to confirm the involvement of the National President-Elect, Mr. Abubakar Yakubu, in a tragic road accident that occurred on Tuesday, 9th December, in Lagos,” Rollas wrote. He explained that the collision resulted from an unexpected mechanical brake failure, leading to the fatal impact.
Rollas added that Yakubu immediately cooperated with law enforcement and emergency responders. AGN leadership has since visited the affected family to offer condolences and support. “The family and the guild have the shared understanding that this was a tragic accident. The family has shown remarkable grace and we are grateful,” he said.
According to Rollas, Yakubu is “deeply shaken” by the incident and continues to pray for the soul of the deceased child and the recovery of the injured mother.
He urged the public and industry stakeholders to avoid speculation, stressing the sensitivity of the moment. “Accidents are painful reminders of life’s fragility and are no respecter of age, status, tribe, or creed,” Rollas noted. He called for unity, compassion, and collective prayers for all those affected.
The AGN emphasised its commitment to fostering responsibility and care within the industry and appealed for privacy for the grieving family and everyone involved as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
