Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that if elected President of Nigeria in 2027, he will amend the constitution and eliminate corruption within his first month in office—or resign.
Speaking during an X Space session titled “Weekend Politics,” Amaechi made bold promises, including changing the constitution to replace the concept of indigeneship with citizenship.
If I become president, I will change the constitution from indigeneship to citizenship. If I do not end corruption in Nigeria within one month, I will tender my resignation, he stated.
Amaechi, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also alleged that powerful individuals regularly visit the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to steal public funds.
It enrages me that those very influential among the ruling class visit the CBN often to steal money. If they used all that money to fix security and the economy, Nigeria wouldn’t be in such a mess,” he said.
On the country’s electoral system, Amaechi harshly criticized the current chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, calling him the “worst INEC chairman in Nigeria’s history.”
He also took a swipe at the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, challenging him to walk freely on the streets of Port Harcourt to prove his popularity.
On the issue of fuel subsidy, Amaechi said he would not reverse its removal if elected. Instead, he pledged to ensure the funds benefit ordinary Nigerians directly:
I will not reverse the removal of subsidies. I will instead direct the funds into the pockets of Nigerians, not the elite, he promised.
