The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members across Nigeria to embark on a nationwide strike following delays in the payment of their June 2025 salaries.
ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development on Monday in Abuja. He said the strike was a response to ongoing hardship caused by recurring salary delays since the federal government switched university payrolls from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). Our members are experiencing hardship. Salaries are often delayed by a week or more, Piwuna said.
At our NEC meeting, we agreed that if salaries aren’t paid within three days of a new month, members should withdraw their services.
He blamed the Office of the Accountant General for the delays, calling it a case of deliberate negligence rather than technical issues with the GIFMIS platform. When funds are released, payments go through without issues. The problem isn’t the system—it’s those in charge, he added.
Piwuna also raised concerns over the federal government’s failure to pay the remaining ₦10 billion in Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), noting that only ₦40 billion of the promised ₦50 billion has been disbursed. We expect the outstanding ₦10 billion to be paid immediately to avoid renewed unrest, he warned.
ASUU branches at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already begun strike action in line with the directive.
