Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in addressing major global issues, particularly in health, education, and agriculture.
Gates made the remarks during a meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday in Jakarta, where he also met with local philanthropists. Expressing optimism about AI’s potential, Gates said the technology will be key to discovering new solutions and delivering essential services.
“AI is going to help us discover new tools,” Gates stated. “And even in delivering health, education, and agricultural advice, we’ll be using AI.”
He also reaffirmed his foundation’s commitment to global health efforts, noting progress in eradicating diseases. “Once we finish eradicating polio, we’d like to move on to measles and malaria. We have new tools for that. And of course, a big part of my optimism stems from what AI can help us achieve,” he added.
President Prabowo acknowledged the significant contributions made by global philanthropists like Gates to Indonesia, revealing that over $159 million has been donated since 2009—mainly to support health initiatives, including vaccines.
Following the meeting, Gates and Prabowo visited a local elementary school to observe a free meal program championed by the president, aimed at improving child nutrition and learning outcomes.
Efforts to eradicate polio, which spreads through contaminated water and sewage, have been ongoing for four decades under the leadership of UN agencies and global health partners.
