
Mohammed Uwais, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has died at the age of 89. His passing was confirmed early Friday by Dr. Kayode Ajulo, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State.
Justice Uwais served as Nigeria’s Chief Justice from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. After leaving the bench, he went on to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, which was established by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. The committee included notable figures such as Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Tributes from across Nigeria’s legal, political, and civil society communities are expected in the coming days.
