British man, 78, dies while swimming in hotel pool during Greek holiday

A 78-year-old British woman has died after reportedly falling ill while swimming in a hotel pool in Hersonissos, Crete.

The tourist, who has not yet been publicly identified, was pulled from the water but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Greek authorities have launched a criminal investigation. Three individuals — two hotel employees, aged 51 and 41, and a 21-year-old lifeguard who was supposed to be on duty — were detained in connection with the incident. All have since been released on bail.

The tragic event follows a series of recent drownings involving British tourists abroad. In a separate incident on July 29, a 52-year-old British man drowned at a hotel pool in Majorca, near the popular Love Island villa.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, responded to the BJ Playa Blanca Hotel, situated between the beaches of S’Illot and Sa Coma. The man was found floating face down in the pool and was declared dead shortly after being pulled from the water.
