Cheers Star George Wendt Passes Away Peacefully At 76

Hollywood is saying goodbye to one of its beloved stars. George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the classic NBC sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76.

According to DailyPost, Wendt died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. His publicist, Melissa Nathan, confirmed the news in an official statement:  Beloved actor and comedian George Wendt, known for starring in the NBC hit comedy Cheers, has passed away. He will be missed forever.

The statement also shared that the Wendt family has requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time.

Wendt’s portrayal of Norm, the affable, beer-loving bar regular, made him a cultural icon and earned him six Emmy nominations. His character was a central figure on Cheers, one of television’s most beloved shows throughout the 1980s.

Beyond his time on Cheers, Wendt brought his comedic talent and warmth to numerous films and TV projects, leaving a lasting impression on audiences around the world.
