Chelsea’s pursuit of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen may face another setback as negotiations risk falling apart, with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins now emerging as a potential alternative. Reports from EPL Index suggest that while Osimhen remains Chelsea’s primary target, concerns about his high wage demands have led the club to consider Watkins as a contingency plan.
The 25-year-old Osimhen’s move to Stamford Bridge was reportedly delayed last summer due to his wage demands of around £250,000 per week. With similar concerns looming this summer, Chelsea is reportedly exploring other options. As a result, Watkins, who has scored 15 goals for Villa this season, has caught the club’s attention.
Although the 29-year-old Watkins doesn’t fit Chelsea’s typical profile under new ownership, his Premier League experience and consistency make him an attractive option. The London club is said to be willing to meet Villa’s £60 million asking price for the striker.
Meanwhile, competition for Osimhen is growing, with Saudi Arabian clubs reportedly prepared to activate his €75 million release clause and offer him a lucrative £750,000 per week contract. Paris Saint-Germain has also shown interest, although their stance is still unclear.
Given the financial hurdles surrounding Osimhen’s transfer, Chelsea is considering other, less risky alternatives. In addition to Watkins, the club is also monitoring Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško.
Some Chelsea fans are already backing Watkins as a safer option, citing his proven consistency and readiness to step into the Premier League without the need for adjustment. As Chelsea navigates its pursuit of a top forward, Watkins’ name continues to rise as a potential solution for the club’s attacking needs.
