President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 12, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest vote. The election, won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola, was controversially annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida (retd).
In a statement released on Sunday, House of Representatives spokesperson Akin Rotimi confirmed the President’s scheduled appearance, noting that members had been formally informed through an internal memo from the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria.
According to the statement, the special joint sitting will take place in the House of Representatives Chamber. Proceedings will begin at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu expected to arrive by 12:00 noon to deliver his address as the Special Guest of Honour.
This year’s Democracy Day theme is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
The event will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of national honours on select legislators by President Tinubu.
Describing the event as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, the House noted that it highlights the National Assembly’s role in promoting democratic values, ensuring accountability, and driving national development over the last 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule.
The statement concluded by urging all Nigerians to mark Democracy Day with reflection, renewed patriotism, and a commitment to building a more inclusive, united, and prosperous nation.
