Eddie Howe Says Missing UCL Spot Would Be Big Blow For Newcastle

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged that failing to secure Champions League qualification would be a “huge disappointment” for his side as they prepare for their final Premier League match of the season against Everton on Sunday.

A win at St James’ Park would likely ensure Newcastle finishes in the top five, potentially securing a Champions League spot. Currently sitting fourth with 66 points, the Magpies are ahead of Chelsea and Aston Villa on goal difference, while Nottingham Forest trails by one point in seventh.

After a historic season that included ending a 56-year trophy drought with a League Cup victory over Liverpool, Newcastle are aiming to cap the campaign with a return to Europe’s top competition—just one year after missing out.

“Football emotions swing so quickly. In that moment, it would feel like a huge disappointment because we’ve been fighting for this for two-thirds of the season,” Howe said on Friday. “If we miss out, it’ll be tough to take. We know what we need to do and we’re fully focused on achieving it.”

When asked about the importance of Champions League qualification for Newcastle’s Saudi-backed ownership, Howe emphasized the sporting motivation over financial incentives.

“People always talk about the money, and I get that—it matters. But for us, it’s about wanting to compete against the best, in the best competitions. That’s why you play this game: to win those big matches.”

Newcastle’s chances against Everton could hinge on the fitness of star striker Alexander Isak, who missed last weekend’s loss to Arsenal due to a groin injury.

“We’d love to have him back,” Howe said. “He needs to be fully mobile because that’s his game—he’s electric when at his best. We’ll only play him if he’s fully fit, but there’s a chance.”
