EFCC Summons Tompolo Over Viral Naira Spraying Video

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo—widely known as Tompolo—will be questioned over alleged abuse of the naira.

In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the agency stated, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!” The post included an image showing the alleged incident.

The controversy arose from a viral video posted on Sunday by a user identified as #harreceipts, showing Tompolo dancing while ₦1,000 notes were being sprayed during his 54th birthday in April.

The footage sparked criticism online, with users accusing the EFCC of double standards and selective enforcement. Some pointed out that others, including the sons of prominent businessmen, had similarly abused the naira without consequence.

The EFCC has previously acted against public figures for currency abuse. Socialite E-Money, actress Iyabo Ojo, and comedian Ayo Makun were all recently questioned over similar incidents.
