English defender Eric Dier will depart Bayern Munich at the end of the 2024–25 season when his current contract expires, the German club confirmed on Friday, May 2.
The 31-year-old centre-back, who initially joined Bayern on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024 before securing a permanent move that summer, has informed the club he will not renew his deal.
“We’ve had talks with Eric about a potential contract extension,” said Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund. “He told us that he won’t extend his time with Bayern and that he’ll leave the club at the end of the season.”
Although Dier’s contract officially ends on June 30, Bayern are reportedly considering a short-term extension to include him in the squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13.
Originally brought in as a backup in central defence, Dier quickly earned a place in the starting lineup alongside Matthijs de Ligt under former manager Thomas Tuchel. Despite seeing reduced playing time under new head coach Vincent Kompany, he has remained an important rotational player, especially during injury absences of key defenders like Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano.
Freund commended Dier’s professionalism and impact on the squad: “We’ve had a great time with Eric and I hope he’ll crown his time with Bayern with a title.”
Multiple reports from French and German outlets suggest that Dier is close to signing a long-term deal with Ligue 1 club AS Monaco, potentially through to 2027. The 49-cap England international is aiming to secure more consistent playing time as he enters the final years of his career.
