Brice Oligui Nguema, the military leader who overthrew President Ali Bongo in August 2023, was officially sworn in as Gabon’s president on Saturday, following a sweeping electoral victory with nearly 95% of the vote.
The inauguration, held at the 40,000-seat Angondje Stadium north of Libreville, marked a historic occasion — the first time a Gabonese president has been sworn in before such a large public audience. Supporters clad in T-shirts and waving flags bearing Oligui’s image filled the stadium, while over 20 African heads of state attended the event.
Among the dignitaries present were Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Gambia’s Adama Barrow, Djibouti’s Ismail Omar Guelleh, and Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi also arrived shortly before the ceremony.
Oligui, 50, now formally begins his presidential term after leading a 19-month transitional government following the end of 55 years of Bongo family rule. His presidency begins with fanfare, including military parades, artistic performances, and a “victory concert” on the Libreville waterfront.
In preparation for the event, hundreds of workers cleaned and repainted roads leading to the stadium. Authorities urged residents to show hospitality to visiting dignitaries and to assist in beautifying the city.
Despite the festive atmosphere, Oligui faces steep challenges. Gabon remains heavily indebted, with public debt expected to hit 80% of GDP. Youth unemployment stands at 40%, infrastructure is in disrepair, and the power grid suffers from frequent blackouts.
During his time as transitional leader, Oligui launched several construction projects and pledged to tackle corruption. He has positioned himself as a reformer focused on rebuilding Gabon’s economy and public services.
