Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has officially launched the reconstruction of the Ibom International Convention Centre and Hotels in Uyo, reaffirming his commitment to transforming the state into a top tourism destination and diversifying the economy beyond oil.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Eno emphasized that tourism is a central pillar of his administration’s ARISE Agenda, and highlighted the importance of world-class infrastructure—such as conference facilities and hotels—in attracting investment and events to the state.
The governor, a former hotelier and Chairman of the State Hotels and Tourism Board, said the projects—originally initiated over 15 years ago—are being revived and modernized to meet current international standards. He quoted Hebrews 11:39–40 to underline the significance of building on the foundation laid by past leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
“I came not just to deepen peace and unity in our state, but to deploy my finisher’s anointing to complete abandoned projects that have already consumed billions of state resources,” Eno stated.
He said the 200-room hotel, expected to be completed within 12 months, and the convention centre will complement the state’s tourism infrastructure, including the ARISE Resort—currently under construction and designed as Nigeria’s premier family-themed resort. Features will include a 9-hole golf course, artificial lakes, chalets, a banquet hall, and children’s recreational areas.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to the state’s post-oil economy, noting Akwa Ibom’s strategic advantage with Ibom Air, a peaceful environment, rich cuisine, and an international airport nearing completion.
He called on residents to support his government’s vision by setting aside political distractions and focusing on development under the ARISE Agenda.
The event drew commendations from political leaders. Senator Aniekan Bassey praised the governor for his inclusive leadership, while House Speaker Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong affirmed that lawmakers are satisfied with the implementation of approved budgets and project execution.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Assam Assam, lauded Eno as a “jinx breaker” for reviving long-abandoned projects, encouraging residents to rally behind the governor’s efforts.
Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said the projects will significantly boost tourism traffic to the state. Traditional rulers and local government leaders also applauded the governor’s resolve to complete legacy projects regardless of who initiated them.
