Actor Eric Dane, widely recognized for his role as a plastic surgeon on the medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” has died at the age of 53, according to U.S. media reports on Thursday.
Last year, Dane revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological condition also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement carried by CBS and other news outlets.
Born in San Francisco, Dane made his television debut in 1991 with an appearance on “Saved by the Bell.”
He rose to prominence in 2006 when he joined “Grey’s Anatomy” as Dr. Mark Sloan, a charismatic plastic surgeon. Over the course of his run on the show, he appeared in 139 episodes through 2021. He also had a role in the HBO drama “Euphoria.
