Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that he will consider leaving the club if his request to maintain a small squad is ignored.
Speaking on Wednesday, Guardiola emphasized that he does not want a large roster of players, as it would lead to several being left out of matchday squads — a scenario he says he cannot accept on a moral level.
“I told the club I don’t want a big squad. I don’t want to put five or six players in the stands every week — I can’t do that,” Guardiola said. “If they don’t keep the squad small, I will leave. It’s impossible for my soul to leave players out like that.”
Guardiola’s comments come at the end of a challenging season for Manchester City. The team’s defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last weekend confirmed they would finish the campaign without a major trophy.
Despite the disappointment, City remain in contention for a Champions League spot going into the final weekend of the Premier League season. A 3–1 victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday boosted their hopes.
City currently sit third in the table with 68 points, just ahead of Chelsea, Newcastle, and Aston Villa — all on 66 points — while Nottingham Forest trail with 67. A win against Fulham on Sunday will guarantee third place for Guardiola’s side. Even a draw might suffice, thanks to their superior goal difference.
