Violence broke out at the All Progressives Congress congress in Ethiope-West Local Government Area of Delta State on Saturday after gunmen attacked a federal lawmaker, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu.
The incident occurred at Ovade, the venue of the congress, shortly after Ibori-Suenu, who represents Ethiope Federal Constituency, arrived at the venue. She is the daughter of former Delta State governor, James Ibori.
According to reports by DAILY POST, several people sustained injuries during the attack.
Eyewitness accounts said violence erupted when armed assailants confronted the lawmaker and her supporters, firing guns and using other dangerous weapons to prevent her from accessing the congress venue. The attack was, however, repelled by Ibori-Suenu’s security aides.
Following the incident, the federal lawmaker appealed to members of the All Progressives Congress in the state to remain calm as efforts are made to restore order.
