On the evening of Thursday, May 15, officers of the Anambra Joint Security Team repelled an attack by armed criminals at a security checkpoint in Isuofia.
According to reports, the assailants opened fire upon encountering the security personnel. In the exchange of gunfire, two of the attackers were neutralized. Unfortunately, one security operative lost his life, and one operational vehicle was set ablaze by the gunmen.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that the criminals fled the scene under the superior firepower of the joint security team, abandoning one of their operational vehicles—a Toyota Sienna.
He added that Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a challenge to the collective resolve of the people and security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements. He assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Ikenga also noted that armed operatives are currently combing surrounding bushes in search of the fleeing suspects.
