House Committee Summons Benue, Zamfara Leaders On Governance Lapses

                House of Representatives

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the Governors of Benue and Zamfara States—Hyacinth Alia and Dauda Lawal—along with their respective state assemblies, to appear before it on Thursday, March 8.

The summons, announced in a statement by the committee’s Head of Media, Chooks Oko, follows a petition by a civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, which urged the National Assembly to take over the legislative duties of the two state assemblies.

The petition claims that the state assemblies have failed in their constitutional responsibilities, prompting the call for federal intervention.

Committee Chairman Mike Etaba, who signed the summons, stated that the involved parties are already aware of the issues at hand and have been given an opportunity to respond.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld at all times,” Etaba said. “This is a chance for the parties to present their side of the story clearly, so Nigerians can understand the facts. Anarchy will never be allowed to thrive in our democracy.”
