Victor Osimhen made history on Wednesday night, scoring twice to break the Turkish football record for most goals in a single season by a foreign player and helping Galatasaray to a 3-0 victory over Trabzonspor in the Turkish Cup final.
The Nigerian striker entered the match with 33 goals and needed two more to surpass the 34-goal mark set by Mario Jardel in the 2000/01 season. Osimhen delivered, scoring in the 46th and 63rd minutes to finish the night with 35 goals in all competitions — a new record.
Galatasaray took the lead in the 5th minute through Baris Yilmaz, who converted a smart assist from Yunus Akgun. Osimhen then took center stage. His first goal came just after halftime — a driven shot into the bottom right corner. The second was a moment of brilliance: a quick turn in the box followed by a curling finish into the top corner.
With 35 goals in 38 appearances, Osimhen has now overtaken Mario Jardel on Galatasaray’s all-time foreign scorers list. Only seven foreign players have scored more, with Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi still leading with 72.
Galatasaray’s triumph marked their 19th Turkish Cup title — a national record. They now have the chance to complete a domestic double with a win over Kayserispor on Sunday, which would seal their 25th league championship. If successful, it would be Galatasaray’s fourth domestic double, last achieved in the 1998–99 season.
