The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a sit-at-home on May 30, 2025, to honour the men and women who died during the Biafran War. This annual memorial, known as Biafra Heroes Day, is intended to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Biafra’s independence.

In a statement issued Monday by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group said the day would be observed with lectures and commemorative events both in Nigeria and abroad. IPOB has informed South East and South South governors, as well as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), to avoid scheduling conflicts with the planned lockdown.

“The peak of the yearly memorial will take place on May 30th. It is a total lockdown day for Biafrans living in Biafra land,” the statement read. “We urge everyone to remain indoors in remembrance of our heroes who fought and died during the Nigerian-Biafran War.”

The group emphasized that there will be no public gatherings or protests in Nigeria to avoid potential clashes with security forces. However, Biafrans in the diaspora are encouraged to hold peaceful demonstrations or town hall meetings in their host countries to mark the day and advocate for the release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The sit-at-home will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., during which schools, markets, churches, and public gatherings are to remain closed. Only essential workers—such as doctors, nurses, journalists, ambulance drivers, police officers, firefighters, and fuel station staff—will be exempt from the restriction.

IPOB also called on families to use the day to reflect on the history of the Biafran struggle, the 1967–1970 civil war, and the ongoing marginalisation of Ndigbo in Nigeria. The statement paid tribute to prominent Biafran figures including the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Gen. Philip Efiong, Chief Dr. Frank Opigo, and Commander Ikonso.

“May 30th is a symbolic day for all Biafrans. It is our day of remembrance, sacrifice, and reflection,” the statement added. “IPOB remains committed to protecting the lives of our people while honouring our fallen heroes.”
