Julius Abure Faction Suspends Alex Otti, Senators Over Party Dispute

The Labour Party faction led by Julius Abure has announced the indefinite suspension of six prominent members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha, citing alleged anti-party conduct.

Also suspended are Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi. According to a statement released on Wednesday, May 7, and signed by National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the suspensions take immediate effect and bar the individuals from all party activities.

The decision followed the recommendations of a five-member Disciplinary Committee set up on May 2, 2025, to investigate allegations of actions deemed harmful to the party’s interests. The committee, chaired by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, reportedly completed its work and submitted findings that were ratified by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC).

The party clarified that Senator Nenadi Usman, who had been linked to internal discussions, is not a registered Labour Party member and therefore not subject to disciplinary measures. It also accused her of lacking credibility to comment on corruption, citing her past issues with the EFCC, including asset forfeitures and plea deals.

On political strategy, the party firmly ruled out any mergers or coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating:
Labour Party intends to contest the 2027 elections as a standalone party. No further discussions on mergers or coalitions will be entertained.
