Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have been knocked out of the ongoing FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Czechia following a 77–51 defeat to Hungary on Wednesday night, July 16.
The Nigerian team opened the game on a strong note, holding Hungary to a 9–9 tie in the first quarter. However, Hungary seized control in the second quarter, outscoring Nigeria 30–12 and swinging the momentum decisively in their favor.
Despite a more competitive third quarter, where Nigeria scored 15 points to Hungary’s 16, the deficit remained substantial. Hungary closed out the game with a 16–15 advantage in the final quarter to confirm their victory.
Hungary’s Kinga Jisepovits led all scorers with 19 points, while Eliza Farbas dominated the boards with 13 rebounds. For Nigeria, Tobenna Nweke top-scored with 12 points, and Francis Chukwu contributed 9 rebounds.
While the loss ends Nigeria’s journey in the tournament, the team made history by becoming the first African side to win a game and reach the Round of 16 in the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup—a significant milestone for African women’s basketball.
