Carlo Ancelotti has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Brazil men’s national football team and will assume the role on May 26, following his final La Liga match with Real Madrid against Real Sociedad.
According to sports journalist David Ornstein, the 65-year-old Italian becomes the first foreign manager in Brazil’s history. The appointment follows months of negotiations, with all contracts now signed. Talks were reportedly smooth and led by Diego Fernandes on behalf of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
Ancelotti, one of the most decorated managers in football, will lead Brazil through the remainder of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. His contract runs until the end of the tournament, which will be held in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
He replaces Dorival Junior, who was sacked in March after 14 months in charge. Ancelotti’s first match in charge will be a crucial qualifier against Ecuador on June 6.
Ancelotti returned to Real Madrid in 2021, adding two La Liga titles and a Champions League trophy to his extensive resume. However, the club has recently underperformed, including a Champions League exit to Arsenal, a Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona, and trailing Hansi Flick’s side in the league.
