JUST IN: Nigerian Nurses Suspend Strike After Four Days Of Nationwide Action

                Nurses deny suspending strike

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide warning strike.

This was confirmed on Saturday by the association’s Assistant Secretary-General, Chidi Aligwe, who stated that all nurses and midwives are to resume duties immediately.

The strike, which began on Wednesday, was a seven-day warning action aimed at pushing for key demands including improved shift and uniform allowances, a separate salary structure for nurses, increased core duty allowance, mass recruitment of nurses, and the creation of a nursing department within the Federal Ministry of Health.

The decision to suspend the strike followed a virtual meeting of NANNM’s National Executive Council (NEC), after the union met with key government bodies on Friday—including the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Office of the Head of Service, and the National Salaries and Wages Commission.

In a circular titled “Suspension of the Ongoing Nationwide Nurses’ Strike”, signed by NANNM President Haruna Mamman and General Secretary T.A. Shettima, the NEC said it suspended the strike after reviewing the signed Memorandum of Understanding and the government’s commitment to meeting the union’s demands within a set timeframe.

The NEC emphasized that no nurse, intern, or locum staff should face any form of punishment for participating in the strike and thanked members for their unity and commitment.

The union also pledged to closely monitor the government’s compliance with the agreed terms.
