All three senators representing Kebbi State officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, May 13, in a move that further shifts the balance of power in the Nigerian Senate.
The senators—Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)—announced their defection during plenary, citing unresolved issues within the PDP as part of their reasons for leaving.
Their move raises the number of APC senators in the 10th National Assembly to 68, while the PDP’s representation has dropped from 33 to 30. The Labour Party (LP) holds five seats, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has two, and both the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have one senator each.
Two Senate seats remain vacant—one in Anambra South, due to the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, and another in Edo Central, vacated by Senator Monday Okpebholo after he was sworn in as governor of Edo State.
The defections reflect the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the APC continues to consolidate its majority and the PDP faces mounting internal divisions and defections.
