Kim Jong Un Secures Re-Election As Head Of North Korea’s Ruling Party

Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as General Secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), which stated that the decision was formally adopted on February 22 during the party’s Ninth Congress.

According to the report, Kim’s re-election was attributed to progress in nuclear and missile development, as well as economic management. KCNA claimed that the country’s war deterrence capability, centered on its nuclear forces, has been significantly strengthened under his leadership.

The agency also noted that party rules were revised during the congress, although no specific details were provided about the changes.

In addition, the congress selected new members of the party’s central committee. However, some prominent figures, including Choe Ryong Hae, chairman of the standing committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly, were not mentioned in the published list, prompting speculation among some South Korean analysts that a younger generation may be rising within the party leadership.

Kim, who has led North Korea since 2011, officially assumed the title of General Secretary in 2021, a position previously held by his late father, Kim Jong Il.

The report suggested that Pyongyang could use the occasion to highlight advancements in intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and hypersonic glide vehicles, as part of efforts to enhance the survivability and precision of its nuclear arsenal.

Meanwhile, an analysis by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) indicated that North Korea may unveil new strategic weapons following the congress, showcasing achievements under its 2021–2025 military modernization plan.

AEI further assessed that Kim is expected to outline defense modernization goals for 2026–2030, potentially focusing on improving second-strike capability, accelerating launch readiness, and diversifying weapons delivery systems.
