Liverpool FC have officially completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. The 24-year-old Dutch international finalized his transfer to Anfield on Friday after successfully passing a medical and signing a long-term contract at the AXA Training Centre.
Frimpong, who operates primarily as a right-sided wing-back, shared his excitement in his first interview with the club’s media.
“It all happened quite smoothly,” he said. “Liverpool showed interest and, for me, it was an easy decision. I told my agents, ‘Whatever it takes, just get this done.’
“To all the Liverpool fans – I’m going to give everything: my energy, my work-rate. Hopefully, we can win together and celebrate together. I’m really excited to be here. Thank you for welcoming me – I promise to give you the energy and commitment you expect.”
Frimpong arrives at Liverpool after a successful four-and-a-half seasons with Leverkusen, where he made 190 appearances, scored 30 goals, and registered 44 assists. He played a pivotal role in the German side’s historic 2023-24 season, helping them secure the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles while going unbeaten in domestic competitions. That campaign was highlighted by a record 51-match unbeaten streak, which only ended in the Europa League final.
Individually, Frimpong’s performances earned him a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season for both 2022-23 and 2023-24.
Born in Amsterdam, Frimpong developed through Manchester City’s youth system before moving to Celtic in 2019, where he won three major trophies during an 18-month spell. He then joined Leverkusen in January 2021.
On the international stage, he debuted for the Netherlands in October 2023 and has since earned 12 caps, scoring one goal.
Frimpong also spoke about the opportunity to work under Liverpool’s new head coach, Arne Slot.
“I’ve had a few conversations with the manager and he’s very positive. He said I can bring energy, speed, and quality to the team. When a coach talks about you like that, it builds confidence,” Frimpong said.
“Even when I was with the national team, some of the Feyenoord players would tell me, ‘He’s the best coach I’ve ever had.’ I’ve always heard great things, and now he’s my coach – I’m really looking forward to it.”
Frimpong’s squad number will be confirmed later this summer.
