Mohamed Salah has been crowned the Premier League Player of the Season, capping off an outstanding year in which the Liverpool forward scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists—five more than any other player in the league.
Now 32, the Egyptian international heads into the season’s final match against Crystal Palace just two assists shy of matching the all-time Premier League single-season record of 20, jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The prestigious award, decided through a combination of public votes and a panel of football experts, marks Salah’s second time winning the honour—his first coming in the 2017–18 season. His win also ends Manchester City’s four-year hold on the award. The last non-City player to claim the title was Salah’s Liverpool teammate, Virgil van Dijk, in the 2018–19 season.
Van Dijk, who recently signed a contract extension with Liverpool, was among the finalists Salah edged out. Other nominees included Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
This accolade marks Salah’s second major individual honour in May. Earlier this month, he was named Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year, securing nearly 90% of the votes—the largest margin of victory for the award in the 21st century.
congrats to him
