Kylian Mbappé has filed a lawsuit against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), accusing the French club of moral harassment and claiming it owes him €55 million ($61 million) in unpaid wages. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the legal action on Thursday.
The Real Madrid forward alleges that PSG mistreated him, especially after he informed the club in 2023 that he would not be renewing his contract. According to the lawsuit, Mbappé was subjected to “lofting,” a French practice where players are excluded from the main squad for disciplinary or sporting reasons. As a result, he was left out of PSG’s preseason tour in Japan and South Korea and was relegated to training with fringe players. He also missed the opening match of the 2023–24 Ligue 1 season before being reinstated after further negotiations.
Mbappé moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer, concluding his PSG career with a club-record 256 goals. His departure followed rising tensions, including boos from some fans during his final home appearance at Parc des Princes.
In 2022, PSG had offered Mbappé the most lucrative contract in their history, showcasing him to supporters with a jersey bearing “2025.” However, the deal lasted only until 2024, with an option for a one-year extension. Mbappé reportedly became frustrated over unfulfilled promises, particularly regarding the club’s player signings.
In June 2023, Mbappé notified PSG that he would not trigger the extension clause, placing the club in a difficult position: either sell him or risk losing him on a free transfer. PSG attempted to sell Mbappé, even accepting a €300 million offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, but he declined the move.
Mbappé’s legal team announced their intent to sue PSG in April, citing the club’s treatment of him during the transfer saga.
Despite the off-field drama, PSG went on to win the Champions League without Mbappé, while he was officially introduced as a Real Madrid player at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in July 2024.
