The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, along with two other doctors, following a prima facie finding of medical negligence in the care of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Nkanu passed away on January 7, 2026, after receiving treatment at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.
Channels TV reports that, in addition to Dr. Majekodunmi, the panel also suspended Euracare anesthesiologist Dr. Titus Ogundare and Atlantis Pediatric Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh.
According to a statement signed by the panel’s secretary, Dr. Enejo Abdu, the trio are barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria pending the outcome of their case before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.
The panel also found prima facie evidence of professional misconduct against ten other doctors, including Drs. Adeseye Akinsete, Chidinma Ohagwu, Anthony Ajeh, Amarachi Bayo, Nkechi Peji, Olaoye Oludare, Agaja Oyinkansola, Patricia Akintan, Babatunde Bamgboye, and Raji Faidat. Eight additional doctors were cleared of wrongdoing.
The decisions followed a review of complaints against 21 doctors, their counter-affidavits, and oral depositions during the panel’s 25th session, held on February 17–18, 2026, at Excel Hotel & Resort in Abuja.
Nkanu had initially been admitted to Atlantis Hospital for a worsening but initially mild illness. While preparations were underway for a transfer to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States, he was referred to Euracare for pre-flight diagnostic procedures, including an MRI, lumbar puncture, and central line insertion. The child passed away following these procedures, prompting his parents to allege medical negligence and professional misconduct.
