U.S. First Lady Melania Trump is set to preside over a United Nations Security Council meeting next week, marking a historic first for a sitting American First Lady.
Her office confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, noting that Mrs. Trump will take the gavel as the United States assumes the rotating presidency of the Security Council.
“First Lady Melania Trump is set to make history at the United Nations, taking the gavel as the United States assumes the Security Council Presidency to emphasize education’s role in advancing tolerance and world peace,” the statement read.
The high-level meeting is scheduled for Monday at 3:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) and will focus on the role of education and technology in promoting peace, security, and global understanding. According to her office, it will be the first time a sitting U.S. First Lady has presided over the Security Council.
The appearance adds to a series of recent public engagements by Mrs. Trump. On January 28, 2026, she rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in New York City as part of her publicity tour for her film, “Melania,” which documents her life in the 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.
Her upcoming role at the United Nations is expected to draw significant international attention as discussions centre on education as a tool for fostering tolerance and strengthening global peace efforts.
