The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has expressed concern over the profane content featured in the Big Brother Naija reality show, promising to take decisive action.
The move follows a petition from activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam, who called for the programme’s ban or restriction from public broadcast.
In a letter signed by NBC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Pauline Ehusani, the Commission acknowledged receipt of the petition and confirmed that it shares the concerns raised.
“Please be informed that the Commission is equally concerned with the brazen contravention of the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code (6th Edition) which clearly prohibit the airing of obscene content,” NBC stated.
It assured that management is already addressing the issue and will take vital steps to ensure full compliance with broadcast regulations.
The Commission also urged Nigerians to help monitor and report inappropriate content:
“In the same vein, the Commission is tasking you and other well-meaning Nigerians to immediately flag such content as soon as it appears on social media; if flagged enough, such content could be taken down permanently.”
