NDLEA Seizes N777m Worth Of Drugs In Edo, Arrests Suspects

The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized illicit drugs valued at over ₦777 million in the last six months and arrested 209 suspects, including a 300-level student of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

Speaking during a press briefing ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the suspects comprise 129 males and 80 females. So far, 24 convictions have been secured, while 110 cases remain pending in court.

One of the suspects, a female undergraduate from Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area, reportedly engaged in drug trafficking to repay a microfinance loan.

Ofoyeju stated that the command intercepted drugs valued at ₦770 million, which he noted would have otherwise funded various criminal activities, including cultism and kidnapping.

He detailed the seizure of 2,538 kg of cannabis, destruction of 20.4 hectares of cannabis farms (weighing 51,082 kg), and the confiscation of other drugs such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, psychotropic substances, codeine-based syrups, cannabis-laced cookies, and Pentazocine ampoules.

On rehabilitation efforts, the NDLEA provided brief interventions for 194 individuals—135 males and 59 females—and fully rehabilitated 19 male clients during the period under review.

Ofoyeju acknowledged Senator Monday Okpebholo’s support in the anti-drug campaign, highlighting his appointment of a Senior Special Assistant on Drug Policy and people-centered initiatives as evidence of his commitment to tackling drug abuse.

He further appealed to the public for cooperation:

“These enemies of the state can run but cannot hide. We will catch them, seize their drugs, trace their illicit wealth, and prosecute them. We urge the public to support our efforts by providing credible information.”

The NDLEA reaffirmed its resolve to rid Edo State of drug trafficking and promote a safer, drug-free environment.
