The Nigerian government has issued a travel and safety advisory to its citizens living in Iran and neighbouring Gulf states, urging heightened caution as military tensions escalate in the region.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring developments following reported military operations carried out by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory actions affecting parts of the Gulf.
Authorities advised Nigerians in affected areas to remain vigilant and avoid strategic or sensitive locations, including military installations and government facilities, which could become potential targets if hostilities intensify.
Citizens were also encouraged to limit non-essential travel and avoid large public gatherings or demonstrations until the security situation stabilises. The government stressed the importance of complying with directives from local security agencies to ensure personal safety.
Nigerian diplomatic missions in the region have been placed on alert, including the embassy in Tehran and consular offices in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. These missions are expected to assist nationals and maintain open lines of communication as events unfold.
The Federal Government reaffirmed that the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority and pledged to provide updates as necessary.
It also called on all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue, emphasising diplomacy as the best path toward global peace and stability.
The advisory follows reports of airstrikes targeting sites in Iranian cities, with explosions and plumes of smoke seen rising in parts of the capital. U.S. and Israeli officials have described the operations as preventive actions aimed at addressing security threats.
International reaction has been cautious. The African Union expressed concern over the potential impact on regional and global stability, urging restraint, while European leaders, including European Council President António Costa, said they were closely monitoring the situation.
Concluding its statement, the Nigerian government reiterated its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and the protection of its citizens worldwide.
