Nigerian Man Sentenced To Prison For Sexual Assaults On UK Trains

A 31-year-old Nigerian man has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting two women on separate train journeys between Hampshire and London, following an investigation by the British Transport Police (BTP).

Esosa Eguakin, of Courtelle Road, Coventry, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault at an earlier hearing. He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, at Guildford Crown Court.

In a statement issued on February 23, BTP confirmed that Eguakin was also handed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). The order imposes several restrictions, including prohibiting him from sitting or standing next to or opposite lone women.

The court heard that on August 21 last year, shortly after 7:15 a.m., Eguakin boarded a service from Fratton to London Waterloo. During the journey, he deliberately sat behind a woman in her 30s and sexually assaulted her.

In a separate incident on October 6, just after 6:00 a.m., he assaulted another woman on a train travelling from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. When confronted, he claimed he was attempting to retrieve a dropped phone. He refused to move away from the victim until an off-duty police officer intervened and removed him from the train at Woking. The officer detained him at the station until uniformed officers arrived and took him into custody.

Following a detailed investigation by BTP detectives, Eguakin was formally charged with two counts of sexual assault.

Detective Constable David Stewart described the offences as predatory and distressing, commending the victims for their courage in supporting the case. He also praised the swift actions of the off-duty officer, noting that the sentence and prevention order send a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated.

BTP urged members of the public to report any sexual offences witnessed or experienced on trains or at stations by texting 61016, or by calling 999 in an emergency, assuring that all reports are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
