NITDA and UK University Forge Alliance to Strengthen Nigeria’s Digital Transformation Agenda

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has partnered with Lancaster University, UK, to deepen research in digital transformation and innovation in Nigeria. Malam Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of NITDA, announced the collaboration while receiving a delegation led by Professor Kirk Semple, Lancaster University’s Director of International Research, in Abuja.

Inuwa emphasized that the partnership aims to harness innovation for sustainable national growth and youth empowerment, particularly through the Research and Innovation Partnership for Entrepreneurship (RIPE) programme, which leverages academic research to drive entrepreneurship and economic transformation. He noted that Africa faces a significant research investment gap that hinders the continent’s progress toward knowledge-based economies, stressing that Research and Development (R&D) is critical for solving sector-specific challenges and informing effective policies.

Highlighting emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), blockchain, robotics, and additive manufacturing, Inuwa described their potential to address local problems and create new economic opportunities. He further stressed the need for a vibrant technology-research ecosystem that unites academia, industry, government, entrepreneurs, and investors, while aligning university curricula with real-world industry demands.

Professor Kirk Semple lauded Lancaster University’s global research reputation and emphasized that strategic partnerships like this enable research-informed policy, support innovation, and drive tangible societal impact. He noted the importance of bridging academia and society, creating diverse networks, and leveraging university expertise to tackle global challenges such as climate change, public health, and technological inequality.

The collaboration marks a significant step in NITDA’s international engagement and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, positioning Nigeria for a leadership role in the global digital economy through research-led innovation.
