Former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has warned against Nigeria returning to the era of petroleum subsidies, describing it as a “scam.” Speaking from his country home in Igbere, Kalu advocated instead for targeted subsidies on food and agriculture to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on ordinary Nigerians.
Kalu commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in reviving the economy, stressing that the administration is working tirelessly to alleviate poverty and stabilize the nation.
“President Tinubu has done very well over the past two years. I’m not saying this for political reasons. We need to support him as he works to rebuild our economy. The foundation is already being laid, but it will take time for the impact to reach the grassroots,” Kalu said.
He noted that global inflation and the lingering economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic will take years to fully overcome, but expressed optimism that the president’s policies will yield positive results within the next two to three years.
“The petroleum subsidy was a scam. Rather than return to it, we should subsidize food and agriculture. The foreign exchange rate has also stabilized in recent months. These are signs of progress,” he added.
On his private visit to Governor Alex Otti, Kalu clarified it was focused on state development, noting his plans to launch five factories in Igbere within the next year. He emphasized the need for peace and unity to support local economic growth.
Reflecting on his tenure as governor, Kalu pointed to his contributions in developing Aba and Umuahia, highlighting his role in establishing local security through the Bakassi Boys and investing in infrastructure.
Reaffirming his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kalu dismissed internal party criticisms and urged members to focus on delivering electoral victories rather than chasing popularity.
“I’ve been in business for 40 years, and I know what it means to manage people and resources. APC must stay focused and committed to delivering at both the state and federal levels,” he said.
Finally, Kalu called on Nigerians to unite in building a stronger nation, stating that while democracy and nation-building are gradual processes, Nigeria continues to make progress in areas like the judiciary and journalism.
“Let’s focus on our duty to the nation. No democracy is built in a day, but we are making steady progress,” he concluded.
