Norway’s royal household has announced that Crown Princess Mette-Marit will require a lung transplant following a noticeable deterioration in her health.
The 52-year-old, who is married to Crown Prince Haakon, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. The chronic condition causes progressive scarring of the lungs, making it increasingly difficult for the body to absorb oxygen.
In a statement released by the palace, officials said medical assessments conducted over the autumn revealed a clear decline in the crown princess’s condition. While preparations are underway, it has not yet been decided when she will be formally placed on the transplant waiting list.
Professor Are Martin Holm of Oslo University Hospital confirmed that medical teams are already planning for the procedure. “We are approaching the point where a lung transplant will be necessary, and preparations are being made so it can be carried out when the time comes,” he said.
The announcement has sparked widespread concern across Norway, with many citizens closely following updates on the crown princess’s health and recovery prospects.
